NCSU CALS Alumni Event

Last year we had the distinct pleasure and honor of photographing the North Carolina State’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Alumni Event. After we delivered the images from that event, we were immediately booked for this year’s Alumni Awards Ceremony. This year, we also photographed their Tailgate event which takes place the following day. One of the greatest compliments we can receive on our work is additional business.

NCSU_CALS_Alumni-8629_PrintNCSU_CALS_Alumni-8793_PrintLindsey Skinner, the Assistant Director of CALS Alumni and Friends Society, helped us plan the photography for the event. We were able to receive a tour of the Close-King Indoor Practice Facility ahead of time. That tour enabled us to plan for lighting and the best vantage points for photographing the tailgate event. The Awards dinner would take place at NC State’s Park Alumni Center on Friday evening. The Tailgate event would be Saturday morning.

Lindsey was kind enough to recommend us to other departments at the University because of our work with the CALS events. We look forward to shooting other events for the University as the opportunity presents itself.

Piedmont Services Executive Head Shots

When it comes to professional corporate head shots, we always deliver. The Piedmont Services Group came to us with specific goals in mind. They had head shots currently being used on their website, but they knew they wanted to increase the quality and thus their credibility as a company. The Executive Team are the faces of the company, so we understood how important these images would be for first impressions with potential new clients.

We always seek to accommodate our client’s specific needs. In this case, these business men had full schedules. They didn’t have an hour or two to come to a studio. We were able to set up on site, right outside their meeting room during a regional meeting that was already taking place.

We Respect Our Client’s Time

Quickly and efficiently, we allowed each Executive to come through and have their photo taken. This enabled us to take a mere 5 minutes with each individual allowing them to get back to their responsibilities with very little interruption. In total, we photographed thirteen different Executives for the company.

Need New Head Shots?

If you know you need new head shots for your updated resume, portfolio or company website, but are short on time, we can help. The experience and skill set we bring to the table enables us to provide quality images in a very brief session.

The Finished Product

Not only was our photo session brief, so was our turn around time. We delivered the completed images in just a week’s time. Our client, the Piedmont Services Group, has since been able to successfully update their website with the new images. The streamlined new look was well worth the effort and time spent.

You can view the images in the context of their website here.

Commercial Photography: Oak Heart Vet

At Charles Dickens Photography, we pride ourselves on providing the highest quality commercial photography available. The Oak Heart Veterinary Hospital recently reached out to us for some professional images. We were able to sit down with them to develop a plan for the shoot to ensure that we captured everything they needed. Their needs included images for marketing materials as well as their company website.

They recently remodeled their offices and we were able to highlight the new look. They also expanded and opened new locations. There are three conveniently located Raleigh, NC locations. We photographed interior and exterior images of two locations and will shoot the third very soon.

As a service to all of our clients, we deliver full sets of web and print resolution image files so that our clients have everything they need for both print and web marketing.

If you’re in the local Raleigh-Triangle area, be sure to visit an Oak Heart Vet location for all your pet needs. Raising Hope Event Photos

Building relationships with people in our community is paramount to what we do. One of those relationships in particular brought us to our next opportunity to shoot a recent local event. The Raising Hope Dinner event put on by The Hope Center at Pullen took place this past June at The Woman’s Club of Raleigh. It is always our honor to take part in capturing events for a good cause.

Our High Quality Photos Lend Credibility

The Woman’s Club of Raleigh is becoming a popular local spot for corporate and upscale events. Knowing the caliber of guests at this particular event, they sought us out specifically. Creating professional, high quality images for our clients is something we take pride in. Once The Hope Center received the images, we were pleased to find them extremely satisfied and overwhelmed with the photos we were able to produce.

About The Event

The Raising Hope Dinner is held annually and honors foster children transitioning to adulthood. The keynote speaker of the event, First Lady Kristin Cooper, is dedicated to aiding the foster children of North Carolina. She has represented many of them in court, using the skills she fostered while obtaining her law degree from UNC.
As well as the Governor’s wife, we also had the pleasure of photographing Elizabeth Gardner, WRAL’s Emmy winning meteorologist as the emcee at the event.

Special Guests

In addition to The Hope Center’s high profile special guests, it was most inspiring to hear from some of the young adults who had grown up in Foster Care. Hearing the testimonies of the blessings and opportunities they’ve received from this generous organization reinforced our support of this program. They are always accepting donations, both of time and finances. Please visit their website to find out how you can get involved in making a child’s future brighter.

E. Carroll Joyner Feature Magazine Shoot

Meet E. Carroll Joyner, a North Carolina treasure. This generous man is responsible for both Joyner Park in Wake Forest, NC as well as the E. Carroll Joyner Welcome Center at his Alma Mater, North Carolina State University. Getting the opportunity to photograph such a local legend was an honor and privilege.

We like to focus on people and telling their stories. Carroll Joyner’s story is the real American dream. He started out as the son of humble farmers barely scraping by and became a first generation College graduate. His sheer grit, determination and commitment to integrity brought him from a mere twenty dollars in his pocket to the wealth he’s created today. Out of that wealth he has learned that there are only three things you can do with money: spend it, invest it, or give it away. He’s found giving it away to be the most fulfilling.

Feature Magazine Shoot

On this particular day, we shot some photos for an upcoming magazine spread featuring our client. He’s being featured for his work with NCSU in the NC State Agriculture and Life Science Magazine (CALS Magazine).

Joyner is a savvy businessman with 15 different business deals in the works at the time we took these photos. Besides his multiple business pursuits, he raised cattle for many years, utilizing his agriculture degree. Mr. Joyner has taken an active role in the Agricultural program at the University since graduating in 1956. He created the N.C. Cattleman’s Foundation in the 1980s, dedicated to supporting beef cattle research. He even donated his own herd of Angus beef to the school.

Our goal in these photos is to give you a glimpse into who Carroll Joyner is. In the photo above you’ll see the most relaxed, genuine smile. That smile rarely left Mr. Joyner’s face as we interacted with him during the shoot. He’s one of the most pleasant, friendly and joyful people you could ever be around.

Down On The Farm

We shot these photos on site at the Fred Smith Company Ranch. Fred Smith is a good friend of Mr. Joyner and his cattle ranch seemed the obvious choice for our photo shoot. The Ranch staff proved extremely helpful as they herded the cows around the pastures so that we could get the best pictures possible.

We wanted to demonstrate not only Mr. Joyner’s exuberant personality, but also his affiliation with livestock and cattle for the University Magazine. The magazine was overwhelmed with the quality and accuracy with which we were able to capture Mr. Joyner. When the article on Joyner and his contributions to the school has been posted we will include a link here.

Despite an extremely hot summer day, we all had a great time! Good conversations, picturesque scenery and great company all lent themselves to an enjoyable photography session on the farm.

Executive Head Shot

We love the opportunity to photograph local Raleigh area executive head shots because we meet so many people in so many different fields of work, and get to help them with their personal branding. We recently welcomed Chris Edwards into our studio to update his executive head shots for his new position at Markraft Cabinets. He is the new Executive Director of the Apex Division. It was awesome hearing his story of working in the cabinetry industry for many years and returning to Markraft after 17 years.  You can read more about his story and see how he used one of his professional head shots for his new bio page here:

Below are a few more of Chris’ head shots, with permission, of course.

NC State Alumni Awards Event

Background Story

We were recently hired to photograph the distinguished alumni awards event for NC State’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, or as I learned very quickly, “CALS”. Yes, I kept thinking everyone was saying “cows”, so I chalked that up to something to do with the agriculture program, but finally figured out it was the acronym for the college. 🙂 You learn something new every day, right!?!

All kidding aside, it was quite an experience get to hear what some of these distinguished alumni have accomplished in industry and academia. Some were head of large global research companies and some were distinguished professors at other leading universities etc. etc. Quite impressive to say the least, but the one common theme was how much they all gained from their time with all the incredible professors and staff at NCSU.  It’s always fun and interesting when we photograph events for organizations, because they’re all a little different and you get to learn some cool new things, if your lucky, and meet lots of great people, like Gary Hahn – the voice of the wolfpack, who was emcee for the event (you can see him in 4th image below).

The Photography Challenge

For this job, we were photographing in a large hall with high ceilings and a really challenging mixed lighting situation. We had lots of natural light coming from the large wall of windows (which was gradually changing as we went from day to evening), which was mixed with the incandescent room lighting. We needed to photograph the speakers speaking along with a group photo just after their speech, so we were shooting with two different lighting set ups. We shot the speakers with ambient light, using high ISO and fairly wide aperture settings because we couldn’t use flash since it would be distracting. We had lights (on camera and off camera flashes with modifiers) for the group photos, and of course we carefully balanced that with ambient light so the background wasn’t to dark. On top of all of the technical challenges, we had a fairly small space for the group photos and had to work around a somewhat annoying school photographer shooting with a mobile phone. All that to say, hiring a professional for your important events is the key to getting great results regardless of the situation. As a pro, you always have to bring not only the right equipment, but more importantly the technical & people skills to every job, because you never know what you’ll run into.

After reviewing the images from the event, the director that hired us said she was absolutely thrilled with the results. She even wanted to go ahead and book us for next year’s event and expand the scope to photographing the tail gate event (NCSU football) for all the alumni in the PNC Arena. Super excited about that for next year! Thanks for reading, enjoy the images below and hope you enjoyed a little slice of what we do everyday.

Mobile Phone Photo Tip – Panoramic Photos

Since we’re working on content for a mobile phone photo course, it’s a great time to share a few simple tips on getting better panoramic images from your phone’s camera.

I personally love photographing panoramic images with my Iphone and think they do a phenomenal job of seamlessly stitching panoramas together. Below are a few recent panos I created with my Iphone:

Panroamas can be great for interior shots where you can't quite sqeeze everything into a nomral shot

Panoramas create a unique perspective for scenic shots

Another scenic shot that just needed a panoramic to do it justice

Iphone panoramas can be great for large groups

Panoramas can be great for large groups or events

Iphone panoramas are espcially great for scenic photos

Panoramas are especially great for scenic photos

The first tip for creating a great panoramic image from your phone camera is to get an Iphone! Only kidding, other phones do great panos as well, but the Iphone just seems to do it really well.

  1. The real first tip is to rotate the phone so you’re shooting in vertical or portrait orientation. This lets you capture more “real estate” vertically in the image and since you’re going to be sweeping left or right, you need to maximize what you can include top to bottom in the image. Yep, that’s a simple one, but it’s technique that a lot of people don’t utilize.
  2. Number two is composition. You need a little composition for the image to have impact, so think about horizon line placement and have some elements at either side of the image, or both, to create some boundaries, book ends, etc. Check out one of my previous posts on composition here for more info on the rule of thirds.
  3. At number three is another key technique to make sure your panos turn out nice. When you’re panning, you need to pan slow & steady (to allow the software to seamlessly stitch your pano). Also, keep the horizon line steady while panning; In other words, don’t move the camera up and down.

Hope you enjoyed! Stay tuned and we’ll tell you how to edit your mobile images to have some color pop and texture like the ones I posted here.

Business Portraits for 50+ Physicians

It’s been a busy summer and we’ve been behind on blog updates so please forgive! 🙂

Over two separate evening shoots, we had the privilege of meeting and photographing all of the Wake Radiology physicians and some of their administrative staff. Despite the size of this project, the process was smooth and efficient because of our up front planning and coordination with Wake’s marketing director Amy Woolard. Amy was fantastic to work with and we partnered with her to create a full suite of updated images to use for all of their marketing projects. There were 6 poses of each physician for a total of roughly 300 final images. The images included a left, right and center facing view in lab coats and in business suits. We edited and retouched all the images and extracted the subjects from the original green screen background so they could use the images in any type of marketing campaign they came up with the in future.

It was such a pleasure working so closely with Amy to plan the shoot. So fun meeting the many people that are the backbone of this great organization as well. Thanks to Wake Radiology, the doctors, staff and especially Amy, for turning a major project into a cake walk. Below are Amy’s comments & feedback in her own words and a few of the final extracted images.

“Working with Charlie Dickens on our corporate photography has been fantastic experience. He worked closely with me to get 50+ physicians photographed over a 2 day period and it went off without a hitch. He was in close contact leading up to the event and we talked through everything from usage to backdrops, positions to Photoshop editing which ensured that he was capturing exactly what we wanted. Charlie’s calm and friendly demeanor put the physicians at ease allowing him to capture relaxed natural smiles. None of the photos we were provided look fake or forced. Thanks Charlie for turning a daunting task into a cake walk”. Amy Woolard – Marketing Manager – Wake Radiology – Raleigh, NC
